  • There is little we can add to the eulogies for Robert Frederick Chelsea Moore other than to list his accomplishments. His first cap came in 1962 during a pre-World Cup friendly against Peru at the moderately late age of 21. Having impressed in that game he played all four games during the 1962 World Cup and his first captaincy came the following May. He won the FA Cup with West Ham in 1964, and followed that with a Cup Winners' Cup victory the next season. His biggest acheivement was lifting the World Cup with England in 1966 which also saw him on FIFA's All-Star team for the tournament and BBC's Sports Personality of the year later that year. His accolades hardly finish there: He went on to set a record 108 caps for England (a record which stood for 16 years); equalled Billy Wright's record of 90 games as England captain, a record which still stands, (incidently a record he would have broken had he not been gracious enough to relinquish the captain's armband to Bobby Charlton on the occasion of his 100th cap in 1970); he was awarded the OBE in 1967; one of the player's of the tournament during Euro 1968; FIFA World Cup All-time team 1994; World Team of the 20th Century 1998; inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in its inaugural season in 2002; World Soccer Greatest XI of all-time 2013; had his number 6 shirt retired at West Ham United; and even had a starring role in the 1981 John Huston movie "Escape to Victory".
He died of cancer aged 51 in 1993.
Pelé said he was the greatest defender he had ever played against.

Quite simply the finest player this country has ever produced.
