  • The Azzurri played their first game against France in 1910, winning 6-2. They are, barring Brazil, the most successful team in international football with four World Cup wins and two European Championship wins. Italy's history with England is very colourful. They are one of only four teams that have a better head to head record against England. (Brazil, Uruguay and Netherlands are the others). The first meeting was a drawn friendly in Rome in 1933 but the next encounter was the most memorable: The infamous Battle of Highbury.
    England had the better of the early exchanges with Italy and it took until 1973 for the Italian's to register their first win against England; a 1-0 win with future England boss Fabio Capello scoring the only goal. Since then Italy have had the better of the important matches and despite a convincing win at the Tournoi de France in 1997, England have only one win since then; a run which includes losing a World Cup 3rd place match in 1990, a Euro quarter final on penalties in 2012, a 2-1 loss in the 2014 World Cup and the Euro 2020 final on penalties.
    Despite Italy's dominance over England, they have once again failed to qualify for a World Cup. In fact, that win against England in 2014 was their last in a World Cup. They haven't qualified since.
