England Penalty Shoot Outs

  • The first time England experienced a penalty shootout was during the 1990 World Cup semi-final against Germany. These tense situations, officially called "kicks from the penalty mark," are governed by rule 10 of the game, set by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). Shootouts are used in competitions where a decisive outcome must be determined on the same day. The concept of penalty shootouts was introduced at a major tournament during the 1976 European Championship. Before their implementation, drawn knockout matches typically resulted in replays a few days later. England had first-hand experience of this during the 1958 World Cup when they lost a playoff to USSR after finishing equal on points after the group stage.

    Loss or draw?

We have consciously chosen to classify matches that go to penalty shootouts as draws. While this decision may be perceived by some as a cynical attempt to soften the blow of England's historic struggles in shootouts, we acknowledge that this is likely a factor. However, it's worth highlighting that England's penalty-taking prowess has improved in recent years, indicating a shift in their fortunes. The winner of a shootout advances to the next round or is crowned champions, while the loser receives nothing. Considering the exhaustive effort both teams put forth during 120 minutes of play before the uncertain outcome of penalties, we believe acknowledging a draw honours the efforts of both sides. It recognizes the intense battle that unfolded on the pitch, where neither team could be separated after two grueling hours of play.

Why do England always do badly in Penalty Shoot-Outs? - a bit of englandstats analysis.

England traditionally have been awful at Penalty Shoot-Outs. Until the 2018 World Cup finals they were 1 from 8 - against Spain in Euro '96, however they successfully doubled their tally when they overcame Colombia in the last 16 at the 2018 World Cup and then tripled it the following year in the UEFA Nations League against Switzerland. However, true to form they then were defeated by Italy in the final of Euro 2020. Currently their record stands at 3-11 (27%).

    Let's crunch some numbers

The number of penalties taken is relatively even (England 56 - Opposition 57) which is a decent sample size so we can drill down to see if a pattern emerges. Hitting the target doesn't seem to be a problem. England have only missed the target four times (7%) whilst opposition takers have missed five times (12%). So clearly being able to hit a target 24ft wide and 8ft high from 12 yards is not the issue. Until Jordan Pickford came along and saved four penalties, doubling the total amount stopped (14%), England 'keepers were getting nowhere near the ball (7%) compared to opposition stoppers who have managed to save 14 England penalties (25%). Also, in all but two of the penalty shoot-outs the opposition goalkeeper has managed to save at least one of England's spot kicks.

    Conclusions

Being able to tuck the ball just inside the post or into the roof of the net is difficult and the risk of missing the target obviously increases. What we can read from the statistics is that English takers seem to be more content with the 50/50 approach of trying to make the 'keeper dive the wrong way, whereas opposition takers are far more willing to take a risk of putting the ball beyond the reach of the 'keeper. And judging by the results it would seem that it's a risk worth taking.

  • Penalty Shootout: England 3-4 West Germany, 4th Jul 1990 at Stadio delle Alpi, Turin (WCF)
  • 1 - West Germany Gary Lineker - Thumped low to Illgner's left. The keeper goes the wrong way.
  • 1 - XoppnameX Andreas Brehme - Similar to Lineker's penalty but more placed into the corner than with speed. Shilton guesses right but it's well out of his reach.

  • 2 - XoppnameX Lothar Matthäus - Another thumping into the side netting to Shilton's right. No chance.

  • 1 - Argentina Sergio Berti - Low to Seaman's left who guesses right but it's out of his reach.
  • 1 - XoppnameX Alan Shearer - High into the roof of the net to Roa's right. No chance.
  • 2 - XoppnameX Hernán Crespo - Saved by David Seaman who dives to his left and palms the ball out at a nice height.
  • 2 - XoppnameX Paul Ince - Saved by Carlos Roa. Almost a carbon copy of the previous penalty. Comfortable for Roa.
  • 3 - XoppnameX Juan Sebastián Verón - Another carbon copy, this time of Shearer's penalty. High to Seaman's right; no chance.
  • 3 - XoppnameX Paul Merson - Similar to Shearer's and Veron's but wider and lower. Roa gets a hand to it.
  • 4 - XoppnameX Marcelo Gallardo - Low to Seaman's right who gets a hand on it too.
  • 4 - XoppnameX Michael Owen - High to Roa's left, it actually hits the post before going in. Roa was going the other way.
  • 5 - XoppnameX Roberto Ayala - Passed into Seaman's bottom left corner who goes the right way but it's beyond him.
  • 5 - XoppnameX David Batty - Saved by Carlos Roa, an easy height to his right.
  • Penalty Shootout: England 5-6 Portugal, 24th Jun 2004 at Estádio da Luz, Lisbon (ECF)
  • 1 - Portugal David Beckham - His standing foot gets too close to the ball which makes it move on the fragile pile of sand which is the penalty spot, just before his right foot balloons it over. You could argue, as Beckham does, that the state of the penalty spot is terrible but it's the same for everyone. In truth a poor penalty.
  • 1 - XoppnameX Deco - Deco does a lot of gardening before his kick and then steps up to side-foot it into the corner to James' left. James had dived the wrong way.
  • 2 - XoppnameX Michael Owen - Thumped down the middle. "A grass cutter" as we used to say. Ricardo obligingly leaps to his left.
  • 2 - XoppnameX Simão Sabrosa - High and emphatic into the James' top right corner. James had dived the other way.
  • 3 - XoppnameX Frank Lampard - A carbon copy of Owen's penalty. Thumped down the middle. Again Ricardo dives to his left.
  • 3 - XoppnameX Rui Costa - Beckham style, he also blasts it over. Once again there's a rueful looks at the penalty spot.
  • 4 - XoppnameX John Terry - Calmly placed down the centre into the roof of the net. Ricardo dives to his right this time.
  • 4 - XoppnameX Ronaldo - Into the side-netting. James dives to his right and almost gets a hand to it but it was too high.
  • 5 - XoppnameX Owen Hargreaves - Passed into the net. Hargreaves must have fooled the keeper as he doesn't move. A good dive to the left and Ricardo would have made a comfortable save. It's all in the eyes. Probably.
  • 5 - XoppnameX Maniche - On a long run up Maniche goes for power into the bottom left corner. James dived to his left.
  • 6 - XoppnameX Ashley Cole - Calmly rolls the ball into the bottom left corner. Ricardo, like James' on the last kick, dives to his left.
  • 6 - XoppnameX Hélder Postiga - Panenka. James' had dived to his right.
  • 7 - XoppnameX Darius Vassell - Vassell did not look so confident and produces the worst penalty of the night, and I'm including the two over the top, scuffing the ball to give Ricardo a comfortable height to his left. Oddly, Ricardo had taken his gloves off.
  • 7 - XoppnameX Ricardo Pereira - Nuno Valente was almost to the penalty area as the designated seventh kicker but Ricardo sends him back. His blood is up and he wants to finish it himself. Perfect penalty into the bottom side-netting. James has no chance.
  • Penalty Shootout: England 1-3 Portugal, 1st Jul 2006 at Arena AufSchalke, Gelsenkirchen (WCF)
  • 1 - Portugal Simão Sabrosa - Placed to Robinson's right, well out of his reach into the side netting.
  • 1 - XoppnameX Frank Lampard - Placed to the left of Ricardo but the keeper guesses correctly and beats the ball away.
  • 2 - XoppnameX Hugo Viana - Goes for power into the right corner but it slams off the upright. Robinson had dived the wrong way.
  • 2 - XoppnameX Owen Hargreaves - Blasted into the bottom corner. Ricardo had guessed correctly and dived to his right but couldn't keep it out.
  • 3 - XoppnameX Petit - Again, low and to the right of the keeper, who guesses correctly and gets his finger tips to it to divert it wide of the post. It is possible the ball would have either hit the post or gone wide anyway but Robinson's fingertips make sure.
  • 3 - XoppnameX Steven Gerrard - A reasonable height to the keeper's left. Ricardo, again, guesses correctly and it's a comfortable save. Not a good penalty.
  • 4 - XoppnameX Hélder Postiga - Similar to Gerrard's penalty but the other side. If Robinson had guessed correctly it would have been a simple save but he dances on his line and takes a step to his left and just watches it go past him.
  • 4 - XoppnameX Jamie Carragher - Carragher steps up and places the ball to Ricardo's left. The goalkeeper doesn't move with his arms stretched wide. Apparently the referee hadn't blown his whistle so a re-take is required. This time Carragher second guesses himself and tries to place it to the keeper's left. It's an awful penalty and easy for Ricardo to save via the crossbar.
  • 5 - XoppnameX Ronaldo - Placed into the side netting to Robinson's left. The keeper had dived the wrong way.
