Match No. 397 - Wednesday, 23rd February 1966, 7:45pm

  • Assist: Roger Hunt. "The only goal came four minutes before half-time and it was Stiles who was credited with the score. The work done by Cohen who crossed the ball for Hunt to head through goalkeeper Tilkowski's hands. It stopped on the heavy ground only inches short of the line and along came Stiles to complete the score." Nobby StilesOnly Goal. Right-footed from 0 yards., 42' 41:03

Notes

  • Player InjuriesBoth injuries occured in separate incidents before half-time. The first when Newton, Banks and Kramer collided [41:50] in the box. The second when Hornig went up to head a goal kick with Cohen [46:41]."Shortly before half-time the Wembley hoodoo took it's customary toll when international debutant Newton severely bruised his left leg in a tackle and was carried off. No sooner had Newton left the field then Hornig, a troublesome winger, also had to be withdrawn with a damaged head. He was substituted by Heiss."
  • Shirt NumberWhen Wilson came on he wore no shirt number.
  • Goal Disallowed"A blocked shot ran away towards the by-line. Netzer chased it and centred perfectly for the substitute Heiss to crash a tremendous drive into the net [74:50]. I thought the ball beat Netzer by a matter of inches to roll out of play before the German reached it and this was confirmed by the linesman with whom the referee consulted before disallowing the goal." TV pictures are inconclusive.
  • Incomplete FootageThe times stated above are approximate as the only TV footage has 8 minutes of the first half missing. However, a considerable amount can be assertained from the remaining footage; enough to be only a few seconds out either way. Credit to Andrej Lojo for some good detective work.
