- Ottaway was a sporting all-rounder having kept wicket for Kent & Middlesex, represented Oxford University at rackets, real tennis and athletics. He was part of the Oxford University team that won the FA Cup in 1874. He also played for the Old Etonians and Crystal Palace. CW Alcock noted in his football annual in 1874 that Ottaway was 'an excellent forward, being fast and very skilful in pilotting the ball'. He was on the FA Committee during 1872-73. A barrister by profession and tragically died at 27 after 'a rapid decline brought on by a cold' whilst he was, apparently, 'at a dance'.
