  • Born Frederick Chappell and changed his name to Frederick Brunning Maddison in 1873. After excelling at rowing and athletics for Brasenose College, Oxford he went on to represent Oxford University at association football where he received his only cap for the very first international match. He later represented Wanderers and Crystal Palace among others. His all-round sporting ability was matched on the football pitch where he played in various positions, a forward during two FA Cup final matches with Oxford University and as a half back for England and for Wanderers in another Cup final. A barrister from 1876 until 1884 when he disbarred himself presumably to take over his father's solicitor's practice after he had died the year before. He's birth certificate just reads Frederick Chappell with his father's name as Frederick Patey Chappell. This middle name is sometimes given to Chappell Jr but there is no evidence to support this. His mother's maiden name was Maddison which might have suggested the name change but the reasoning is unknown.
