  • Welch went to Harrow School and consequently played for the old boy's team, Harrow Chequers where he earned his first England cap as a full back in 1872. He was mostly known for his goalkeeping skills and tendered the net in two FA Cup finals for the Wanderers (1872 & 1873) before gaining his second England cap, this time in his more accustomed position of 'keeper in 1874. He would later serve on the FA Committee (1873-75 & 1879-80). He also excelled at cricket and skiing. He became Principal of the Army College in Farnham where he stayed until his death. He is occasionally noted as 'De Courtenay' on some records.
