- Born in Stoke in the first quarter of 1860, Johnson lived and worked as a grocer in Wharf Street all his life. He studied at Saltley College, Birmingham in 1880-81 where he earned his first international cap. He then played for Stoke for several years beofre sustaining an injury in April 1885 during his day job - he fell from a horse-drawn carriage - and had to retire from football. He carried on within the game for several more years as a member of the Staffordshire FA until 1898. He died three years later.
