- CE Smith was born in Colombo, Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka). His father was a travelling East India merchant. He schooled in England at Rossall School where he made the first XI in 1869-70 and was captain in his second year. Played for the original Crystal Palace and Wanderers and served on the FA Committee 1875-76. Cousin of Gilbert Oswald Smith.
