  • AH Savage has been quite an elusive figure in terms of research for football historians (but not the most elusive q.v. Alf Harvey). Generally accepted as Arthur Henry Patrick Savage born in Sydney, Australia. One reputed source claims he wrote in the Sydney Morning Herald of his solitary appearance, but we have been unable to corroborate this. He reputedly was "big and red-bearded".
Savage was to son of Dr Arthur Savage of the Royal Navy, but we know very little of his schooling and early career only that by 1871 he was in London and by 1876 was playing for Crystal Palace amateurs when he was called up for England. By 1883 Savage was back in Australia marrying his fiancé Florence in New South Wales. Savage rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Australian Artillery and served in the Boer War thereafter suffering from ill-health, retiring in 1902. His condition deteriorated and he was seized with a paralysis in August 1903 and set sail for London in March 1904 to recover his health. However, supposedly a second seizure was responsible for his death in August 1905.
