Notes
- 4th SubstituteRashford becomes the first player to be a 4th sub in a competitive game after IFAB allows a 4th substitute in extra time during the 2018 World Cup.
- Penalty Shoot-out
Radamel Falcao scored. Thumped high down the middle. Pickford dived to his right.
Harry Kane scored. Into the bottom right side netting. Ospina had dived the right way but he had no chance.
Juan Cuadrado scored. Similar to Kane's but almost into the roof on the right hand side. Pickford went the right way but like Ospina, had no chance.
Marcus Rashford scored. Carbon copy of Kane's. Bottom right. Ospina, again, guessed correctly but he was miles away from it.
Luis Muriel scored. Passed, nay, rolled into the left of the goal. Pickford was totally fooled as he moves to his right.
Jordan Henderson saved by Ospina. Ospina dives a mile to his left and gets a fist to it. It wasn't a poor penalty, but I fear Henderson telegraphed his intentions too easily.
Mateus Uribe hit the bar. Goes for power and slams it against the crossbar to Pickford's left. Possibly a bit too complacent?
Kieran Tripper scored. Slammed into the top left. Almost all of the penalties have gone this way and the 'keepers have aways guessed correctly but again it's too far out of reach.
Carlos Bacca saved by Pickford. Not entirely sure what Bacca was attempting. It was high and slightly to Pickford's right and all the Englishman had to do was stick out a big left paw to stop it.
Eric Dier scored. Again to the right of the 'keeper but this time he gets a hand to it but it's only a glancing blow as it nestles in the bottom right corner.
England win only their second penalty shoot-out (Spain, Euro 1996) and progress to the quarter-finals. The majority of penalties from both sides were top draw. The three that missed: Henderson's was decent but Ospina excelled himself to leap to stop it. The two Colombian penalties were thwarted by the frame and Pickford's left hand. And that was the minutiae that seperated the two teams.
- Scoring RecordKane equals Tommy Lawton's scoring record of scoring in six consecutive England matches. Lawton did so in 1938/39.
- Penalty: Harry Kane5th scored from 6 taken (83.3%). England's 119th overall. 57th minute. Kane is rugby tackled to the ground yet again at the World Cup. After Colombia try to delay the penalty for at least three minutes, Kane in unflustered and dispatches the penalty right down the middle of the goal as Opsina dives to the left.
