Match No. 1060 - Saturday, 6th July 2024, 6:00pm

  • "Switzerland’s opener duly arrived. There was a combination between Widmer and Zuber before Ndoye was allowed by Konsa to fizz in a low ball. A touch off Stones took it on and Walker lost Embolo, who beat Pickford from close range." Breel Embolo, 75' 74:13

England Starting Formation

3-4-2-1 After the first subs, Bellingham took up Mainoo's position alongside Rice.

Notes

  • Penalty Shoot OutEngland win 5-3 on penalty kicks.
Cole Palmer scored. Left footed pass into the net to the 'keeper's right. Sommer had dived the wrong way.
Manuel Akanji saved by Pickford. Passed low to Pickford's left but the Englishman reads it right and makes a comfortable save.
Jude Bellingham scored. Bellingham waits for Sommer to commit and then just nonchalently passes it the other way, to Sommer's left.
Fabian Schär scored. Very similar to Akanji's penalty. Pickford feinted to go the right way but at the last minute goes the other way.
Bukayo Saka scored. Left footed hit to Sommer's left into the side netting. Sommer had dived the other way but even if he'd have guessed correctly I doubt he'd have saved it.
Xherdan Shaqiri scored. Hit high to Pickford's left into the side netting. Pickford had guessed correctly but it's too high and he dives under it.
Ivan Toney scored. Toney takes two steps, and keeping his eyes on Sommer all the time, hits it into the bottom right corner. Sommer had guessed correctly but it was in vain.
Zeki Amdouni scored. Waits for Pickford to commit and then pokes it down the middle.
Trent Alexander-Arnold scored. Into the top right whilst Sommer dives the wrong way.

All of England's penalites were top drawer. Most of Switzerland's too. Akanji was unlucky that Pickford guessed correctly as Schär did exactly the same thing and scored. Pickford has now saved 5 penalties in shoot-outs, more than all the other England goalkeepers put together.
