- The Greek national football team played it's first game in 1929, a 4-1 defeat by Italy. They have qualified for three World Cups with their best result coming in 2014 when they reached the second round. In the European Championship they have faired significantly better. Depsite only making one previous finals in 1980, Greece stunned the world by winning the 2004 tournament against the hosts and favourites Portugal. Since then they qualified for two more finals including a quarter final place in 2012.
Their record against England is not so bright. Since 1971 they have only manged two draws in nine matches.
