  • Morse's father Francis Morse was vicar of St John's Church, Ladywood, Birmingham and Harold was born at the parsonage. Initially favoured rugby and had a spell with Derby Wanderers (1876) before changing codes in 1878 to play for Notts County and Notts Rangers in 1880s. He played one season with Notts County at centre forward but "did not show to so much advantage in that position" so moved back to defence. After football, like his father, was ordained. He and his fiancée Mabel Cursham (sister of Arthur & Harry Cursham) emigrated to the US in 1886 and they married there that year.
