- Alf was born in the summer of 1869. His youth career started at Hanley Tabernacle FC and Etruria FC before joining Stoke in 1887. He made 115 appearances for Stoke in six seasons before retiring due to a knee injury in 1892. According to some reports the injury was so severe Alf was almost an invalid by the turn of the century.
