- Iceland's national team's first official match was a 3-0 loss against Denmark in 1946. They have failed to qualify for the World Cup since their first attempt in 1958 and the European Championship since 1976.
England played a B team match in 1982 in Reykjavik which ended in a 1-1 draw. Manager Ron Greenwood wasn't even there as he was preparing the main squad for a friendly against Finland the following day. The Icelandic FA managed to persuade the FA to upgrade the match to official. The second meeting was in preparation for Euro 2004 in the FA's Summer Tournament, England won 6-1. Iceland pulled off the surprise of the tournament in the last meeting by beating England 2-1 in the first knock-out stage of Euro 2016.
