Argentina

Asociación del Fútbol Argentino
Founded: 1893
Federation: CONMEBOL
- Argentina is one of the oldest football playing nations. The Asociación's foundation in 1893 was the earliest in South America and preceded many European countries.
The first official international match came 9 years later with a 6-0 thrashing of neighbours Uruguay in Montevideo.
Argentina's first appearance in the World Cup was in 1930 and they have managed to lift the trophy on three occasions (1978, 1986 and 2022).
England's first encounter with the Argentines was a friendly at Wembley in 1951 and since then have maintained a good record against the South American team despite the bitterness most English feel about the 'Hand of God' during the 1986 World Cup which, to date, has been only one of two victories Argentina have enjoyed over the Three Lions.
