Iran's FA was founded in 1920 but their first official match wasn't until 1941, a 0-0 against Afghanistan. Iran won three Asian Cups in a row from 1968 to 1976 but their best result since was a 3rd place in 2019. They have qualified for six World Cups, their first being Argentina 1978, but have failed to progress to the knock-out stages each time. Iran and England only meeting was at the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.
