Billy Austin - 1 Cap (0 Goals)

  • Full Name: Sam William Austin
  • Born: 29th April 1900, Arnold, Nottinghamshire
  • Died: 2nd April 1979, Kidderminster aged 78
  • England Career: 1925
  • Positions whilst with England: Outside Right
  • Clubs (and caps) whilst with England: Manchester City (1)
  • FA Legacy Number: 497
  • Sam, Billy or Willie, as he had been known, was quite elusive to find. He was registered as Sam William Brown, his mother's maiden name on his birth certificate, which is all the more confusing as his parents George and Sarah Ann had been married and living together for twenty years and for at least five elder siblings.
His footballing career started at Arnold St Mary's before joining Norwich City in October 1920 where he stayed for a further three seasons before a £2,000 transfer to Manchester City, a hefty sum at the time, the world record being £5,500. He was an FA finalist the following year after his sole England cap. He moved to Chesterfield in December 1931 and then to Kidderminster Harriers before retiring in 1933.
