  • Born in Manchester sometime during the summer of 1896, Tommy first started playing for Harpurhey Boys Club at 14 and then Newtown FC at 16, Walkden Central at 19 before moving to Rochdale in January 1917 aged 21. There he was spotted by Manchester United and was bought for £1,500 in June 2017 - although he had to wait for the end of the First World War before making his debut. During that time he was loaned to Atherton and back to Rochdale. In December 1920 Chelsea paid £3,300 to bring him to the capital where he stayed until his untimely death from sleeping sickness (encephalitis lethargica) at the age of 28.
