Following the break-up of the Soviet Union the Moldovan FA came into being in 1990 and the national team played their first game in 1991 losing 2-4 to Georgia. UEFA affiliation in 1993 was followed by FIFA affiliation in 1994.
England and Moldova were drawn together for qualifying for the 1998 World Cup. The first encounter was in Chisinau and was Glenn Hoddle's first game in charge and David Beckham's first cap. The game was won 3-0 and the home leg at Wembley was won 4-0.
Two more World Cup qualifiers in 2012/3 saw England run out 5-0 and 4-0 winners.
