As a section of the Football Federation of Yugoslavia the Kosovo FA was established in 1946. However, it wasn't until independence from Serbia in 2008 that, as a separate state, applied for FIFA and UEFA membership. It took until 2016 for full membership of both to be ratified. During that period they were allowed to play friendly matches, the first being a 0-0 draw with Haiti in 2014. There first competitive match as a FIFA member was a 2-0 win against Faroe Islands in June 2016 and their first competitive match was a 1-1 draw in Finland three months later. England and Kosovo have never played before but are paired in Euro 2020 qualifying.
