- Notes:
- The Bicentennial Cup Tournament was staged in the United States in 1976 to mark the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. In keeping with the occasion, the hosts invited three powers of world football: England, Italy, and Brazil. Some historians have speculated that England and Italy were included only because they had failed to qualify for the upcoming European Championship finals. Yet, as that tournament took place barely two weeks later, there is little evidence to suggest the invitation was based on consolation rather than prestige.
For the United States, there remained the problem of fielding a competitive side. The national team was widely regarded as too inexperienced to match the level of opposition, so organizers took an unusual step: they created “Team America,” a composite squad drawn from the stars of the North American Soccer League. This made for a curious blend of talent, with legends such as Pelé and Bobby Moore turning out in American colors.
England defeated this experimental side 3–1, but as the “Team America” fixture was deemed unofficial, the result is not recorded as a full international. The matches against Italy and Brazil, however, were fully recognised, and England performed respectably—finishing as runners-up, behind Brazil.
