  • Cameroon qualified for the 1982 World Cup in which they managed to hold Italy, Poland and Peru to draws. Sadly they went no further in the tournament. It was the 1990 World Cup where Cameroon and possibly Africa really burst onto the scene. They defeated reigning champions Argentina in the opening match before dispatching Romania and Columbia in the second round. In the quarter-final they met England but despite going 2-1 up in the second half they eventually lost out to 2 Gary Lineker penalties.
