  • The Portuguese Football Union (now the Portuguese Football Federation) was formed in 1914 and the Portuguese national team's first international was a 3-1 loss to Spain in 1921. Portugal have a rather colourful relationship with England. Some good, some bad. The first meeting with England was a 10-0 thrashing in 1947 and remains their biggest ever defeat.
With help from superstars such as Eusebio they qualified for their first World Cup in 1966 reaching the semi-finals before being beaten 2-1 by England again. After that, Portugal spent a long time in the wilderness despite qualifying for the 1986 World Cup and gaining revenge on England by beating Bobby Robson's team in the first group game. Sadly, they lost the two remaining games and headed home.
The Golden Generation of Portuguese football began in the late 90s but despite the world class players, consistency was not always evident. They reached the quarter-finals of Euro '96 but failed to qualify for the World Cup 1998. They were eliminated from Euro 2000 in the semi-finals and crashed out in the group stage of the 2002 World Cup. The highlight was reaching the final of Euro '04 on home ground (eliminating England on the way via penalties in the quarter-finals) but they lost out to longshots Greece at the final hurdle.
The 2006 World Cup saw them knock England out once again on penalties, again in the quarter-finals but they went on to lose to France in the semis. Another semi-final defeat by Spain in Euro '12 beckoned.
Finally, just when we all thought that the Golden Generation was at an end, a very unfancied Portugal surprised everyone by winning Euro 2016.
