- Post war East Germany played seperately from West Germany until reunification in 1990. Their first match was a 3-0 loss to Poland in 1951.
They qualified for the 1974 World Cup in West Germany and were drawn in the same group as their neighbours which resulted in a very politically charged encounter that the East won.
both qualified for the next stage and the West Germans went on to win the competition whilst the East were beaten 2-0 by the Dutch.
England played East Germany four times. Twice in Leipzig and twice at Wembley. England won three and the fourth was drawn.
