Match No. 627 - Wednesday, 9th September 1987, 8:30pm

  • "Yet West Germany eventually took the lead, in the 24th minute, with a goal created from nothing more than a crisp prod forward from Buchwald. Littbarski took possession just outside the England penalty area and turned sharply to swerve a superb shot past Shilton." Pierre Littbarski, 24'23:14
  • "Just past the half-hour Littbarski produced a wickedly inswinging corner from the left. Anderson appeared to make sufficient strong contact to be debited with an own goal, but Littbarski eventually gained the credit for the goal he had earned. Either way the unsighted Shilton had no chance of making a save." Pierre Littbarski, 33'32:21
  • "...in the 84th minute Wuttke, who had come on for Voller, collected a ball from Thon and cut in from the left before beating Shilton from the corner of the penalty area with a shot that cleared the England goalkeeper then dipped in under the bar." Wolfram Wuttke, 84'83:13

Notes

  • Second Littbarski GoalFrom a Pierre Littbarski corner Viv Anderson gets to the ball first before Peter Shilton at the near post. The goal should have been credited as an Anderson own goal but it's little wonder the goal was credited to Littbarski as the touch on his head is so slight and only dectectable on slow-motion replays. Anderson certainly impeded Shilton in his efforts to get to the ball first.
